Jeff Garlin makes unreasonable conversations seem perfectly ordinary, which is why we rate his work alongside Larry David. His ease in an ensemble is a substantial comic skill, though it cannot make an aimless film worth watching.

Jeff Garlin lets an awkward conversation continue without announcing that it has become a joke. In Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000), his Jeff Greene treats the repeated disagreements as nothing unusual. Alongside Larry David, that ease makes the embarrassment plausible: he does not need to underline how unreasonable the exchange has become. We rate him most highly here, as an actor who gives a comic partner time without making his own presence feel incidental. The skill is in keeping the conversation believable while it gets worse.
That relaxed manner needs a film with some reason to keep talking. Steven Soderbergh's Full Frontal (2002) offers a useful caution, rather than much evidence against Garlin as an actor. We were bored by the hour mark because scenes continued after everyone had run out of things to say. Garlin's credit, ‘Harvey, probably’, suits the film's indulgence towards its own jokes about Hollywood. He is part of an ensemble here too, but there is little pleasure in being kept company by a film so pleased with itself.
His move into feature directing followed stand-up and his involvement in developing Curb Your Enthusiasm. He wrote, directed and starred in I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With (2006), his feature directorial debut, adapted from a one-man show. Dealin' with Idiots (2013) was fully improvised and drew on his experiences of youth sports. The choice makes sense for an actor so comfortable with everyday absurdity, though it is his work with David that gives us the clearest reason to recommend him.
On Curb Your Enthusiasm, Garlin belongs to a cast with useful differences in temperament. Cheryl Hines gives the disagreements a steady measure of reason, while Susie Essman has a force David cannot simply talk around. JB Smoove changes the comic rhythm through sheer confidence; Garlin's comfort with the quarrelling helps keep it all plausible. The repeated disputes can become wearing, so our admiration comes with a limit on how much we want at once. Watch an episode, then give the arguments a rest.
Biography
Jeff Garlin is an American stand-up comedian and actor. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he trained at the Second City theatre in his hometown and studied filmmaking at the University of Miami before beginning his career in stand-up and sketch comedy.
He is best known for playing Jeff Greene on the HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000–2024), on which he also served as executive producer. Garlin appeared as Harvey in Steven Soderbergh's Full Frontal (2002). His voice work includes the Captain in WALL·E (2008) and Buttercup in Toy Story 3 (2010) and Toy Story 4 (2019). He has also played Murray Goldberg in the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs (2013–2023) and had recurring roles in series such as Mad About You and Arrested Development.
