Biography
Joan Bergin is an Irish costume designer. She began her career in Dublin theatre in the 1970s as an in-house designer at the Focus Theatre and worked with producer Noel Pearson from 1977 to 1987. She also designed for productions at the Gate, Abbey, Gaiety and Olympia theatres, as well as various television productions. Her early film work includes costume design on My Left Foot (1989) and The Field (1990), both directed by Jim Sheridan, with whom she has maintained a long collaboration.
Bergin designed the costumes for In the Name of the Father (1993). Her other film credits include Dancing at Lughnasa (1998), The Prestige (2006) and Greta (2019). On television she worked on The Tudors (2007–2010), for which she won three Primetime Emmy Awards, and Vikings (2013–2017). She was born in Cabra, Dublin, and lives in the city with her partner, the former RTÉ documentary maker Kevin O’Connor.
