Joe Morton makes intelligence convincing and authority worth watching. We value him most when the assured professional is allowed some doubt; too many supporting parts settle for his competence when he can offer more.

As Captain McMahon in Speed (1994), Joe Morton has the sort of job he is often given: the professional who ought to know what to do. His precise delivery makes that authority persuasive without requiring much explanation. Jan de Bont builds the thriller around a bomb on a bus, with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock giving us reasons to care beyond the next stunt. We recommend it despite the plot's overreaching, though its tightly focused action leaves Morton in support. He is good at looking qualified; there are films that ask more of him.
The breakthrough was The Brother from Another Planet (1984), in which John Sayles cast him as a mute alien. Morton's expressive physical performance is a useful corrective to the idea that his chief asset is an authoritative voice. He can hold our attention without speaking. By Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), as Miles Dyson, he was finding prominent supporting work in large-scale action films. Those parts suited his assurance, although the silent lead remains a reason to wish he had been entrusted with more central roles.
In Lone Star (1996), his third film with Sayles, Morton gets a more complicated authority figure to play. His Delmore Payne has the intelligence we expect, but the part also allows doubt and moral conflict. We were moved by the way these people make the Texas border town's divided history feel personal. Sayles occasionally joins their stories too neatly, but the performances give those connections the emotional weight the writing needs. We would choose Sayles as the director who makes the fullest use of him.
From 2013 to 2018, his work as Rowan Pope in Scandal gave more room to the precise, theatrical delivery of his stage work, particularly in the monologues. A complicated villain offers a welcome opportunity to make that familiar intelligence troubling. The reservation across his work is how often casting settles for the smart, stable supporting man, when Morton plainly has the means to do something else. We would like more parts that put his competence under pressure. Start with Lone Star, then try the silent lead in The Brother from Another Planet.
Biography
Joe Morton is an American actor known for work in film, television and theatre. He was born in New York City on 18 October 1947 and studied drama at Hofstra University.
Morton made his Broadway debut in Hair and received a Tony Award nomination for Raisin. He has appeared in more than seventy films, including The Brother from Another Planet (1984), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) as Miles Dyson, Speed (1994) as Capt. McMahon, American Gangster (2007) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).
On television he played Henry Deacon in Eureka, Eli Pope in Scandal (for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series in 2014) and Rev. Arthur Finer in God Friended Me.
