Biography

John Mollo (18 March 1931 – 25 October 2017) was a British costume designer and writer on military uniform history. He designed the costumes for Star Wars (1977) and its sequel The Empire Strikes Back (1980), as well as for Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979).

Mollo won Academy Awards for Best Costume Design for Star Wars and, shared with Bhanu Athaiya, for Gandhi (1982). His other credits include Outland (1981), Chaplin (1992) and Event Horizon (1997). He also worked on the television series Hornblower.
