Biography
John Savident was a British actor. Born on 21 January 1938 in Saint Peter Port, Guernsey, he began his working life in the Manchester police force before turning to acting in the mid-1960s.
He appeared in numerous stage productions, including at the National Theatre and the Old Vic, and took film roles in A Clockwork Orange (1971), Gandhi (1982) and The Remains of the Day (1993). On television he played Sir Frederick 'Jumbo' Stewart in the first series of Yes Minister (1980) and later became widely known as the butcher Fred Elliott in Coronation Street (1994–2006). He also appeared in Doctor Who, Blake's 7 and The Avengers.
Savident died on 21 February 2024, aged 86.
