Biography
Joseph A. Valentine (born Giuseppe Valentino) was an Italian-American cinematographer. He began working in films in the 1920s after training in photography and became a chief cinematographer in 1924. He worked initially at Fox Studios before moving to Universal, where he was under contract from 1936 to 1946.
Valentine photographed several notable films including The Wolf Man (1941), Saboteur (1942), Shadow of a Doubt (1943) and Rope (1948), the last three for Alfred Hitchcock. He received five Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography and won in 1949 for Joan of Arc (1948). He died of a heart attack in 1949.
