Biography
Jules Furthman was an American screenwriter, also credited as Stephen Fox and Julius Grinnell Furthman. He began as a magazine and newspaper writer before entering films in 1915. During the First World War he wrote under the pseudonym Stephen Fox, believing his surname sounded too German, but reverted to his own name after the war.
Furthman wrote or co-wrote screenplays for many notable films, including The Docks of New York (1928), Shanghai Express (1932), Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), Only Angels Have Wings (1939), To Have and Have Not (1944), The Big Sleep (1946), Nightmare Alley (1947) and Rio Bravo (1959). He contributed to eight films directed by Josef von Sternberg and several directed by Howard Hawks, and received an Academy Award nomination for adapted screenplay for Mutiny on the Bounty.
