Biography

Lauren Bacall was an American actor. Born Betty Joan Perske on 16 September 1924 in New York City, she studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and began as a model before entering film.

She made her screen debut opposite Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not (1944) and appeared with him in several subsequent films, including The Big Sleep (1946), Dark Passage (1947) and Key Largo (1948). Later credits include How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), Misery (1990) as Marcia Sindell, The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996), Dogville (2003) and Birth (2004). She also worked extensively on Broadway, winning Tony Awards for Applause (1970) and Woman of the Year (1981).

Bacall received an Academy Honorary Award in 2009. She died on 12 August 2014 in New York City.
