Biography
Karl Júlíusson is an Icelandic production designer and costume designer who has been based in Norway since the 1990s. He began working in film in the 1980s, initially making costumes for director Hrafn Gunnlaugsson's Viking films, including When the Raven Flies (1984), and the pair collaborated on five films.
He is known for his production design on several films by Lars von Trier, including Breaking the Waves (1996), for which he received a Robert Prize, and Dancer in the Dark (2000). He has also worked frequently with Kathryn Bigelow on The Weight of Water (2000), K-19: The Widowmaker (2002) and The Hurt Locker (2008), winning an Art Directors Guild Award for the latter. Other credits include Kon-Tiki (2012) and Antichrist (2009).
Júlíusson has received multiple awards, including five Amandas, two Kanon Prizes, a Gullruten and three Roberts.
