Ken Olin puts actors and their characters’ feelings first. We value that approach, though Paradise is a reminder that persuasive performances can only do so much for improbable plotting.

In Paradise (2025), Sterling K. Brown keeps us watching through plot turns that are not always easy to believe. His performance offers a useful starting point for Ken Olin, one of the programme’s directors, whose chief interest is what actors can find in a scene. We were moved by Brown because the feelings remained persuasive even when the plotting did not. That suits Olin’s preference for intimate character work over conspicuous flourishes. We value that approach, without assuming that every virtue or fault of a series belongs to one director.
His early directing came on Thirtysomething (1987–1991), in which he also played Michael Steadman. Working with Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz helped shape his attention to behaviour. He moved primarily into directing and producing in the 1990s, then directed 23 episodes of Alias (2001–2006). Working with J.J. Abrams there added a greater emphasis on pace to that grounding in behavioural drama. These connections help explain an approach that has remained useful to him beyond family drama, without making the credits themselves a reason for praise.
Brothers & Sisters (2006–2011) and This Is Us (2016–2022) gave him sustained work as both director and executive producer. These family dramas make good use of his close work with actors and his ability to handle an ensemble. Dan Fogelman, creator of This Is Us and Paradise, is a recurring collaborator. Olin’s unobtrusive style can look like routine television directing. That does not trouble us when the performances are convincing.
Paradise is worth following, with a caveat about how often it asks us to overlook loose plotting. Its second season demands more patience with flashbacks, and emotional conviction cannot make every narrative detour necessary. Those are reservations about the programme, not grounds for assigning its writing problems to Olin. They also set a sensible limit on our recommendation of him: his attention to actors is valuable, but his presence cannot guarantee a tightly told story. Start with Paradise for Brown, and be prepared to forgive the plot more than once.

Ken Olin is an American actor, television director and producer. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he is known for his acting role as Michael Steadman in the series Thirtysomething (1987–1991).
Olin later focused on directing and producing. His directing credits include episodes of Alias (2001), Brothers & Sisters (2006), This Is Us (2016) and Paradise (2025). He is married to actress Patricia Wettig.
