Biography
Leonard Rosenman was an American composer of film, television and concert music. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on 7 September 1924, he studied composition with Arnold Schoenberg, Roger Sessions and Luigi Dallapiccola after serving in the US Army Air Forces during the Second World War. He began his film career in 1955 with the scores for East of Eden and Rebel Without a Cause.
Rosenman composed for more than 130 works. His credits include Barry Lyndon (1975), for which he won an Academy Award for adaptation of classical music, Bound for Glory (1976), also an Oscar winner for adaptation, Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), The Lord of the Rings (1978) and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986). He received two Emmy Awards for television scores. Rosenman died in Woodland Hills, California, on 4 March 2008.
