Biography
Marin Karmitz (born 7 October 1938) is a Romanian-French film producer, distributor and exhibitor. He emigrated to France in 1948, attended the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC, later La Fémis) and began working in the film industry as an assistant director and director of photography.
In 1967 he founded the production company MK2, which he developed into a major independent film production, distribution and exhibition group specialising in auteur cinema. Karmitz produced Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Three Colours trilogy (Three Colors: Blue, 1993; Three Colors: White, 1994; Three Colors: Red, 1994) as well as films including The Piano Teacher (2001), Code Unknown (2000) and Certified Copy (2010). In 2005 he handed day-to-day leadership of MK2 to his sons Nathanaël and Elisha.
