Biography
Krzysztof Piesiewicz (also credited as Krzysztof Marek Piesiewicz) was a Polish lawyer, screenwriter and politician. He studied law at Warsaw University and began practising in 1973. Through the late 1970s he became involved in political cases, defending opponents of the Communist regime and serving as a legal adviser for Solidarity; he assisted in the prosecution of the murderers of Jerzy Popiełuszko.
In 1982 Piesiewicz met director Krzysztof Kieślowski. The pair collaborated as screenwriters on No End (1984) and subsequently on The Decalogue (1989), A Short Film About Killing (1988), A Short Film About Love (1988), The Double Life of Véronique (1991) and the Three Colours trilogy (Blue, 1993; White, 1994; Red, 1994). Their later joint work included Heaven (2002). Piesiewicz co-wrote screenplays for seventeen films directed by Kieślowski.
Piesiewicz served in the Polish Senate from 1991 to 1993 and from 1997 to 2011, and was head of the Social Movement party. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for Three Colors: Red (1995). He died on 14 May 2026.
