Biography
Michael Harney is an American actor of film, television and theatre. Born in the Bronx, New York City, he trained intensively with acting teachers William Esper and Phil Gushee before running his own studio in New York for eight years. During that time he acted in or directed more than 80 plays and one-acts, and appeared on Broadway in a revival of On the Waterfront.
Harney’s screen breakthrough came with a recurring role as Detective Mike Roberts on NYPD Blue. He is known for his performance as Corrections Officer Sam Healy in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black (2013–2019), and for film roles including Pete Jensen in Erin Brockovich (2000), the Blackjack Pit Boss in Ocean’s Thirteen (2007), Wolfie in A Star Is Born (2018), and appearances in Widows (2018) and The Iron Claw (2023). He has also had recurring parts in series such as Deadwood, Weeds, True Detective and For All Mankind.
