Biography
Michael Lonsdale was a French-British actor who appeared in more than 180 films and television productions. He was born in Paris on 24 May 1931 and died there on 21 September 2020.
Lonsdale returned to Paris in 1947 to study painting but turned to acting, making his stage debut at the age of 24. He was bilingual and worked in both English- and French-language productions. His film roles include Jean-Pierre in Ronin (1998), Dupont D'Ivry in The Remains of the Day (1993), Hugo Drax in Moonraker (1979), Claude Lebel in The Day of the Jackal (1973) and the Abbot in The Name of the Rose (1986).
In 2011 he won the César Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Of Gods and Men (2010).
