Biography

Paul Lieberstein is an American writer, director, producer and actor. Born on 22 February 1967 in Westport, Connecticut, he is best known for his work on the NBC series The Office (2005–2013). He wrote 16 episodes, directed seven, served as executive producer and showrunner for seasons five to eight, and played the recurring role of human resources manager Toby Flenderson.

Earlier in his career he wrote for King of the Hill (1997), The Drew Carey Show (1995) and Dead Like Me (2003), winning a Primetime Emmy Award for his work on the former. He has since directed episodes of The Newsroom (2012) and The Mindy Project (2012), and contributed as writer and director to later projects including Space Force (2020) and The Paper (2025).
