Pearce Quigley makes eccentric people funny without treating them as fools. His dry delivery is useful in an ensemble; given the lead in Small Prophets, he supplies the gentleness and dignity that make us want to stay.

In Small Prophets (2026), Pearce Quigley plays Michael Sleep as a gentle man who does not ask for our pity. We can enjoy his peculiarities without feeling that the joke has told us everything worth knowing about him. Quigley’s restraint keeps us interested in the person after we have registered the eccentricity. It is a fine leading performance, and a persuasive reason to give an actor accustomed to supporting parts more to do.
The move to the centre follows a screen career largely spent in ensembles, with Russell in Detectorists (2014–2022) a particularly sustained role. There were film parts too, including the Community Policeman in Danny Boyle’s Millions (2005) and Joshua in Mike Leigh’s Peterloo (2018). His dry delivery and understated comic timing fit that supporting work, where a performance must find its place among others. Mackenzie Crook, who writes and directs Small Prophets, gives those qualities room across a six-part series. Quigley does not need to become more emphatic to carry it.
The most persuasive evidence is in Michael’s friendship with his colleague Kacey, played by Lauren Patel. We were moved by the simple pleasure these two take in one another’s company, which both actors make feel unforced. Their scenes give Crook’s folk magic a reason to matter: we care about the people before we ask what the strange events mean. The pleasure is in watching them together, and Crook is right to let that ordinary affection occupy so much of our attention.
That warmth has a limit, and Small Prophets sometimes grows too comfortable with everyone’s quirks. Quigley’s restraint cannot by itself make the whimsy appealing to someone who dislikes it. Nor should his success here become an excuse to give him nothing but kindly eccentrics. What works is the sense that Michael has more to him than the comedy needs at any given moment. Start with Small Prophets for Quigley, provided its fondness for folk magic sounds inviting.
Biography
Pearce Quigley is an English actor. He was born Pierce J. Quigley on 16 May 1965 in Salford, Greater Manchester.
Quigley has an extensive stage career, with appearances at the National Theatre, the Globe and the Royal Court, as well as in the West End and with the RSC. On screen he is known for his role as Russell in the sitcom Detectorists (2014–2022) and as Gospel John in The Gentlemen (2024). He played the lead role of Michael Sleep in the 2026 series Small Prophets.
His other television credits include Happiness, Cutting It, Rovers, Mandy and Death in Paradise. Film roles include Millions (2005), The Way Back (2010) and You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (2010). He also plays Will in the BBC Radio 4 sitcom Alone.
