Biography
Peter O'Toole was a British-Irish actor. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began working in the theatre, performing with the Bristol Old Vic and gaining recognition as a Shakespearean actor. He made his West End debut in 1959 in The Long and the Short and the Tall and played Hamlet in the National Theatre's first production in 1963.
O'Toole made his film debut in 1959 and achieved international recognition playing T. E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia (1962), for which he received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He was nominated for the award seven more times and received an Academy Honorary Award in 2002. Other film roles include those in Becket (1964), The Lion in Winter (1968), The Last Emperor (1987) and Troy (2004). He voiced Anton Ego in Ratatouille (2007) and appeared as Pope Paul III in the television series The Tudors (2007).
O'Toole received four Golden Globe Awards, a BAFTA Award for Best British Actor and a Primetime Emmy Award.
