Biography
Piero Gherardi (20 November 1909 – 8 June 1971) was an Italian costume designer, production designer and art director. He is best known for his work with Federico Fellini on La dolce vita (1960) and 8½ (1963), for which he won Academy Awards for Best Costume Design.
Gherardi trained as an architect and began working in film production in the late 1940s. He collaborated with Fellini on earlier films including Nights of Cabiria (1957) and later on Juliet of the Spirits (1965) and Boccaccio '70 (1962). He also worked with directors such as Mario Monicelli on films including Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958) and For Love and Gold (1966).
Gherardi received further Academy Award nominations for production design on La dolce vita, 8½ and Juliet of the Spirits, and for costume design on the latter. He died in Rome.
