Biography
Piero Tosi (10 April 1927 – 10 August 2019) was an Italian costume designer. Born in Sesto Fiorentino near Florence, he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. He entered film work through a connection with Franco Zeffirelli, assisting on Luchino Visconti's stage production of Troilus and Cressida before moving to Rome.
Tosi collaborated extensively with Visconti on films including Bellissima (1951), Senso (1954), Rocco and His Brothers (1960), The Leopard (1963), The Damned (1969) and Death in Venice (1971). He also worked with directors such as Vittorio De Sica on Marriage Italian Style (1964) and Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963), Pier Paolo Pasolini on Medea (1969), and Liliana Cavani on The Night Porter (1974). His designs were noted for historical research and detail.
Tosi received five Academy Award nominations for Best Costume Design and won an Honorary Academy Award in 2013. He also won two BAFTA Awards for Best Costume Design and two David di Donatello awards.
