Biography
Robert Rutherford Beatty (19 October 1909 – 3 March 1992) was a Canadian actor who worked in film, television and radio, and was especially known in the UK. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London after moving to Britain in 1936. He made his English stage debut with RADA and began his professional career in 1939.
Beatty appeared in numerous films including Odd Man Out (1947), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) as Dr. Ralph Halvorsen, Where Eagles Dare (1968), The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), Superman III (1983) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987). He also voiced the Left Door Knocker in Labyrinth (1986) and appeared in television series such as Doctor Who (1963) as General Cutler and the miniseries Jesus of Nazareth (1977). During the Second World War he gained prominence through BBC radio reports on the London Blitz, and later starred in the radio series featuring detective Philip Odell.
