Biography
Robert F. Boyle (also credited as Robert Boyle) was an American art director and production designer. Born in Los Angeles on 10 October 1909, he died there on 1 August 2010.
After graduating from the University of Southern California with a degree in architecture, he began working in 1933 as a sketch artist and draftsman at Paramount Pictures. He later became an art director at Universal. Boyle collaborated repeatedly with Alfred Hitchcock, serving as associate art director on Saboteur (1942) and Shadow of a Doubt (1943), and as production designer on North by Northwest (1959), The Birds (1963) and Marnie (1964).
His other credits include production design on Fiddler on the Roof (1971) and art direction on The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) and Cape Fear (1962). He received four Academy Award nominations for art direction and was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2008.
