Biography
Rosalind Chao is an American actress. She began performing as a child in a California-based Peking opera company and later trained in Taiwan. After earning a degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Southern California, she returned to acting following a period working as a radio newswriter and at Disneyland as an international tour guide.
Chao gained prominence with her role as Soon-Lee Klinger in the final episodes of MASH (1983) and the subsequent series AfterMASH. She is also known for recurring appearances as Keiko O'Brien in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Rose Hsu Jordan in The Joy Luck Club (1993), Pei-Pei in Freaky Friday (2003), and Hua Li in the live-action Mulan (2020). She reprised the character of Pei-Pei, credited as Mama P, in the sequel Freakier Friday* (2025).
Chao has appeared in numerous television series including Grey's Anatomy, Bones, Shameless and Castle, and films such as What Dreams May Come (1998) and I Am Sam (2001). She is married to actor Simon Templeman.
