Biography
Sandy Smolan is an American director of feature films, television series and documentaries. He began his career directing documentaries, including The Maghreb Journals at the age of 20. His debut feature film, Rachel River (1987), was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
Smolan has directed numerous television episodes, including three for Northern Exposure (1990–1991). His other credits include episodes of L.A. Law, Doogie Howser, M.D., Brooklyn Bridge, Ally McBeal, Dawson's Creek, Everwood, The O.C., One Tree Hill and Brothers & Sisters. He has also directed television films such as Taking a Stand (1989), for which he received an Emmy nomination, and the mini-series Beach Girls (2005).
Later work includes documentaries such as 12 Stones (2009) and The Human Face of Big Data (2014), as well as the virtual-reality film The Click Effect (2016). He is married to actress Pamela Reed.
