Biography
Stéphane Fontaine is a French cinematographer. He graduated from the École nationale supérieure Louis-Lumière in 1985 and began his career as a first assistant camera on films by directors including Arnaud Desplechin, Jim Jarmusch, Leos Carax and Olivier Assayas.
He has worked as director of photography on The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005), A Prophet (2009), Rust and Bone (2012), Captain Fantastic (2016), Elle (2016), Jackie (2016), Ammonite (2020) and Conclave (2024). Fontaine won the César Award for Best Cinematography for The Beat That My Heart Skipped and for A Prophet, and received a BAFTA nomination for Conclave.
