Biography
Stephen Adly Guirgis is an American playwright, screenwriter, director and actor. Born in 1965 in Kearny, New Jersey, he was raised in New York City and graduated from the University at Albany, SUNY. He studied theatre at HB Studio and became a member and former co-artistic director of New York City's LAByrinth Theater Company.
Guirgis has appeared in supporting roles in films including Meet Joe Black (1998), Synecdoche, New York (2008), Margaret (2011), Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014), Vice (2018) and Motherless Brooklyn (2019). On television he has acted in series such as Law & Order, Russian Doll and New Amsterdam. His plays, produced Off-Broadway and on Broadway, include Between Riverside and Crazy, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2015.
