Biography
Stephen Roark Gyllenhaal is an American film and television director and poet. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, with a degree in English.
He began directing in the late 1970s and early 1980s with after-school specials and television films such as Paris Trout (1991), for which he received a Directors Guild of America Award. His feature films include Waterland (1992), A Dangerous Woman (1993), Losing Isaiah (1995) and Homegrown (1998). Since the mid-1990s he has worked primarily in television, directing episodes of Twin Peaks (1990), Homicide: Life on the Street (1993), Numb3rs (2005), The Mentalist (2008), Rectify (2013), Blue Bloods (2010) and Billions (2016).
Gyllenhaal is also a poet whose work has appeared in literary journals; his collection Claptrap: Notes from Hollywood was published in 2006. He is the father of actors Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
