Biography

Stuart Gilmore was an American film editor and occasional director. He joined Paramount Pictures in 1927 and began editing films in 1934, remaining there until 1945. During this period he edited several comedies directed by Preston Sturges, including The Lady Eve (1941) and Sullivan's Travels (1941).

Later credits include War and Peace (1956), Hatari! (1962), The Alamo (1960), Airport (1970) and The Andromeda Strain (1971). He received three Academy Award nominations for Best Film Editing, for The Alamo, Airport and (posthumously, shared) The Andromeda Strain. He also directed a number of films, among them The Virginian (1946).

Gilmore died of a heart attack in Los Angeles in 1971 while working at Universal Pictures.
