Biography
Stuart Holmes (born Joseph Liebchen) was an American actor and sculptor. He appeared in nearly 450 films between 1909 and 1964, often in uncredited or supporting roles, and was sometimes credited as Stewart Holmes or T. Arthur Holmes.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, on 10 March 1884, Holmes began in vaudeville and stage work, including Shakespearean roles and a period in Germany, before moving to film. He had leading parts in silent pictures such as Life's Shop Window (1914) and appeared opposite Theda Bara in several Fox productions. After the advent of sound he took character parts and worked as a Warner Bros. extra, with uncredited appearances in films including The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), Gilda (1946), Singin' in the Rain (1952), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), North by Northwest (1959) and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). His final screen credit was in Youngblood Hawke (1964).
Holmes also worked as a sculptor, producing pieces for at least three California post offices under the Federal Art Project: in Oceanside (1936), Claremont (1937) and Bell (1937). He was married to astrologer Blanche Maynard from 1916 until his death in Hollywood, California, on 29 December 1971.
