Biography

Theodore Bikel (1924–2015) was an Austrian-born actor, folk singer and musician. He fled Vienna with his family after the Nazi occupation and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. His film debut was as the First Officer in The African Queen (1951).

Bikel received an Academy Award nomination for his role as Sheriff Max Muller in The Defiant Ones (1958). On stage he created the part of Captain von Trapp in the original Broadway production of The Sound of Music (1959) and played Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof more than two thousand times. He co-founded the Newport Folk Festival in 1959 and appeared in numerous television series including Star Trek: The Next Generation and Columbo.
