Thomas Middleditch plays anxiety from the neck down: the sweat, the stammer, the body that rebels before the mouth catches up. It carried six years of Silicon Valley and it is nearly all he has been asked to do on screen since.

Richard Hendricks is offered money for something he did not know he had built, and his body gets there before his brain does. He sweats. He stammers. He is sick in a bin. Thomas Middleditch plays Richard in Mike Judge's Silicon Valley (2014) as a man whose body objects to every decision his mind makes, and the trick of it is that the mind is usually right. Richard's code is good. It is the rest of him that cannot cope.
The part came after years in improv, at Second City and iO in Chicago and the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York, and small film work, including a broker in a bowtie in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). Improv is a training in saying yes quickly, and Middleditch's odd achievement in Silicon Valley is to have built a character who cannot say anything quickly at all. The series ran six years and he held it together for all of them, which is harder than it sounds, because Judge and his writers had one story and told it every season. Richard has to be surprised by the same reversal six times, and Middleditch finds a slightly different flinch for each.
He is a straight man in the old sense: the still point the comedy bends around. Miller's Erlich, Kumail Nanjiani and Martin Starr sniping at each other from two feet apart, Zach Woods's alarmingly eager Jared, all of them are louder than Richard and none of them would be funny without him standing at the edge of the scene being quietly appalled. Somewhere in the middle seasons we noticed we were wincing before a scene had gone wrong, because Middleditch's shoulders had already told us it would. That is a real skill and it is a narrow one, and the screen has mostly asked him for it and nothing else.
What it has not asked for is the other Middleditch. He has said himself that he is "usually the super-weird, absurd person" and that Richard is "more subdued", and the long-form improv specials he made with Ben Schwartz, Middleditch & Schwartz (2020), show a faster, stranger performer who does his best work with objects that are not there. Since the series ended the film and television work has been voices, Terry in Solar Opposites (2020), and supporting parts in large machines like Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), none of which uses that man either. A Broadway debut in 2024 suggests he knows it.
Silicon Valley is the case for him and it is a good one. Whether anyone points a camera at the louder performer is the open question, and we would like to see it answered.
Biography
Thomas Middleditch is a Canadian actor, comedian and writer. Born on 10 March 1982 in Nelson, British Columbia, he studied theatre at the University of Victoria and trained in improv at The Second City and iO Theater in Chicago before moving into professional work.
He is best known for playing Richard Hendricks in the HBO series Silicon Valley (2014–2019), for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Other credits include voice roles in Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero (2014–2017), Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017) and Solar Opposites, as well as appearances in films such as Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and The Cat in the Hat (2026). He made his Broadway debut in 2024 in Eureka Day.
