Biography
Uli Edel, also credited as Ulrich Edel, is a German film and television director. He was born on 11 April 1947 in Neuenburg am Rhein, Germany. After studying theatre studies and German philology, he trained in direction at the Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film München, where he met producer Bernd Eichinger. He later worked as an assistant director and editor with Douglas Sirk.
Edel’s early feature Christiane F. (1981) was a commercial success. He followed it with Last Exit to Brooklyn (1989), for which he received the Bavarian Film Award and the German Film Award for best direction. His other films include Body of Evidence (1993), The Little Vampire (2000) and The Baader Meinhof Complex (2008), on which he also collaborated on the screenplay.
Edel has directed numerous television productions, including the episode “Double Play” of Twin Peaks (1990), episodes of Oz and Tales from the Crypt, and miniseries such as Rasputin (1996), The Mists of Avalon (2001) and Houdini (2014). Rasputin won a Golden Globe for best miniseries.
