Biography
William Schallert was an American character actor whose career spanned more than six decades. Born in Los Angeles in 1922, he appeared in hundreds of film and television roles.
He played Mayor Schubert in the 1967 film In the Heat of the Night. Schallert was known for recurring roles including Martin Lane in The Patty Duke Show (1963–1966) and Leander Pomfritt in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1959–1963), as well as Nilz Baris in the Star Trek episode "The Trouble with Tribbles" (1967). He served as president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1979 to 1981.
Schallert died in Pacific Palisades, California, in 2016.
