Biography
Andy Devine, also credited as Andrew Vabre Devine, was an American character actor. Born in Flagstaff, Arizona, he attended several colleges including Santa Clara University, where he played football, and briefly appeared in semiprofessional games under the pseudonym Jeremiah Schwartz before entering films.
Devine became known for his distinctive raspy voice and roles in Westerns. He appeared as Buck in Stagecoach (1939) and later played Cookie, sidekick to Roy Rogers, in ten films. On television he portrayed Jingles in The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok (1951–1958) and hosted the children's series Andy's Gang. Other notable credits include A Star Is Born (1937), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), How the West Was Won (1962) and the voice of Friar Tuck in Robin Hood (1973). He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
