Biography
Atsushi Okui is a Japanese cinematographer and director of photography, primarily known for his work in animation at Studio Ghibli. He began his career at Asahi Production in the early 1980s, serving as director of photography on projects including Mobile Suit Gundam films, before joining Studio Ghibli in 1993 when its photography department was established.
Okui has been director of photography or held related roles on numerous Ghibli features, including Porco Rosso (1992), Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001), Howl's Moving Castle (2004), Ponyo (2008), The Secret World of Arrietty (2010), The Wind Rises (2013), When Marnie Was There (2014) and The Boy and the Heron (2023). He has collaborated extensively with director Hayao Miyazaki and contributed to the studio's transition to digital techniques.
