Biography

Candice Bergen is an American actress. Born in Beverly Hills, California, she began her career as a fashion model, appearing on the cover of Vogue, before making her screen debut in the 1966 film The Group. She went on to appear in films including The Sand Pebbles (1966), Carnal Knowledge (1971), The Wind and the Lion (1975), Starting Over (1979), and Gandhi (1982).

Bergen is best known for her title role in the CBS sitcom Murphy Brown (1988–1998, 2018), for which she won five Primetime Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. She later played Shirley Schmidt in the ABC series Boston Legal (2005–2008). Her other television appearances include guest roles in Sex and the City and voice work in Family Guy and BoJack Horseman.

In film, she has appeared in Miss Congeniality (2000), Sweet Home Alabama (2002), Bride Wars (2009), Book Club (2018), and Let Them All Talk (2020), in which she played Roberta.
