Carla Gugino's gift is to stay perfectly calm while everything around her comes apart, and for years it was spent on other people's blockbusters and short-lived series. Mike Flanagan's horror finally gave it something to do.

In The Fall of the House of Usher (2023), Carla Gugino's Verna comes to each of the Usher children as a different woman, and every one of them has the same unhurried curiosity. The hair and the clothes change; the look does not. It is the look of someone with all the time there is, mildly interested in how you will spend yours. A lesser actor would have played six characters. Gugino plays one, and the series, which shouts where Poe whispered, is steadier whenever she is in it.
The calm took a long time to find its use. She started young, modelling at 15 and taking screen roles from 1988, and the part that made people notice was Ingrid Cortez in the Spy Kids films (2001–2003), the first of four with Robert Rodriguez. After that came supporting turns in large pictures, Lucille in Sin City (2005) and Sally Jupiter in Watchmen (2009), and a run of series leads, Karen Sisco (2003), Threshold and Jett, that critics liked and networks did not keep. Casting took the Spy Kids mother as a hint. For most of two decades she was the actor everyone agreed was better than her parts, which is a compliment nobody can spend.
Mike Flanagan changed that. Gerald's Game (2017) gave her a lead built on one woman under pressure and began a partnership that now runs to five films. The Haunting of Hill House (2018) followed, with Gugino as Olivia Crain opposite Henry Thomas as the young Hugh. The two of them play a marriage that is happy for just long enough to hurt, and it hurt us more than we expected, because Gugino plays Olivia's happiness without a shadow on it and gives us nothing to brace against. The middle episodes are as good as television horror gets, and a good deal of the reason we care is her.
What she does not do is rescue material. Usher is handsome, gory and often good fun, and Bruce Greenwood holds it up; Gugino makes her scenes worth watching and cannot make the game of spot-the-reference any less thin. Her strength is honesty inside heightened material, and long, dense speech delivered as though it were ordinary talk. That needs a director who writes long and trusts the actor to keep it plain. Flanagan does. Sebastian Gutierrez, with whom she has made four films, has kept coming back to her too. Others have mostly asked her to stand beside the lead and look composed.
She has said she hopes to keep scaring herself creatively and to do the things she does not know she can pull off. Five films with one director is a comfortable place to say that from. Start with Hill House, go to Usher for her and for Greenwood, and reserve judgement on the rest until somebody else lets her be the point.

Carla Gugino is an American actress. She was born on 29 August 1971 in Sarasota, Florida. She began acting in the late 1980s and appeared in early films including Troop Beverly Hills (1989), This Boy's Life (1993) and Son in Law (1993).
Gugino gained wider recognition for roles in the Spy Kids trilogy (2001–2003), Sin City (2005), Night at the Museum (2006), Watchmen (2009) as Sally Jupiter, San Andreas (2015) and Gerald's Game (2017). She has frequently collaborated with director Mike Flanagan, starring as Olivia Crain in the miniseries The Haunting of Hill House (2018), appearing in The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020), and playing Verna in The Fall of the House of Usher (2023). Other television work includes the series Karen Sisco (2003), Threshold (2005–2006) and Jett (2019). She has been in a relationship with director and screenwriter Sebastián Gutiérrez since 1996.
