Carrie-Anne Moss makes capable women convincing, particularly when a role demands physical skill. We rate her assurance highly, but The Matrix also shows the limitation: the writing needs to give her more of a person to play.

In The Matrix (1999), Carrie-Anne Moss makes Trinity's physical competence easy to believe. Lana and Lilly Wachowski ask their cast to explain a great deal, and some of those explanations are ponderous; Moss gives us someone whose abilities need less discussion. We were exhilarated by the fights, and her physical assurance was part of the pleasure. She is compelling enough to make us want to know Trinity beyond what she can do. The script is less forthcoming.
That limitation matters when we consider Moss as an actor rather than simply an action performer. Alongside Keanu Reeves, an effective guide through the film's confusion, she helps distinguish a character whose job in the story is more fully developed than her personality. The role required extensive stunt and martial-arts training, and the physical commitment is a substantial part of her acting. It is worth valuing that work without pretending it solves what the writers have left out. We recommend The Matrix warmly, but would have welcomed more of the woman doing the fighting.
The breakthrough did not lead only to more action: she played Natalie in Christopher Nolan's Memento (2000), before returning as Trinity in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (both 2003). Her nuanced supporting work in Memento is a useful reminder that she has more to offer than physical skill. The familiar casting is as tough, capable women with some vulnerability beneath their self-possession. The question is how much room a particular script gives her to show that vulnerability.
Television later gave that capability a professional setting, with her authoritative Jeri Hogarth in Jessica Jones (2015–2019). A powerful attorney offers other ways to play toughness, and the role deserves attention alongside her recurring work in thrillers and science fiction. The Matrix Resurrections (2021) brought her back as Trinity, but we would not use that character as the limit of our interest in Moss. Start with The Matrix for the physical performance, then try Memento for a part that asks something else of her.

Carrie-Anne Moss is a Canadian actress. She was born on 21 August 1967 in Burnaby, British Columbia.
After early television roles, Moss gained international recognition for portraying Trinity in The Matrix (1999). She reprised the role in the sequels The Matrix Reloaded (2003), The Matrix Revolutions (2003) and The Matrix Resurrections (2021).
Her other notable film work includes Memento (2000), for which she won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female, and Snow Cake (2006), for which she won the Genie Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. She has also played Jeri Hogarth in several Marvel Netflix series, including Jessica Jones (2015–2019).
