Biography
Hugo Weaving is an English actor. Born in Ibadan, British Nigeria, to English parents, he moved to Australia in 1976 and trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, graduating in 1981.
He first gained prominence in Australia with roles in the television series Bodyline (1984) and films including Proof (1991) and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994). Internationally, he is known for playing Agent Smith in the Matrix trilogy (1999–2003), Elrond in The Lord of the Rings (2001–2003) and The Hobbit (2012–2014) trilogies, V in V for Vendetta (2006), and Johann Schmidt / Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). He has also voiced Megatron in the Transformers films (2007–2011) and appeared as Tom Doss in Hacksaw Ridge (2016).
Weaving received multiple Australian Film Institute Awards, later AACTA Awards, for his performances. Recent credits include Billy in the film The Royal Hotel (2023) and Frank Harkness in the series Slow Horses (2022–).
