Moretz's particular skill is playing a girl who can do the impossible thing and not the ordinary one: break a man's arm, but not sit at a lunch table. The films around her have often been uneven. She rarely is.

In Kick-Ass 2 (2013) Mindy Macready hangs up Hit-Girl and tries out for the dance team. Jeff Wadlow stages the audition as a training montage, and it is the only stretch of the film where the joke and the character are the same thing. Moretz plays her as someone who can break a man's arm and has no idea how to sit at a lunch table, and the high-school scenes have a tension the fights never manage. We laughed properly at it, and we were not laughing much elsewhere; the film around her is loud, flat and unsure whether it is joking, and we gave it 46. She was the reason to stay.
She started at six, taught by her older brother Trevor, who has been her acting coach and manager, and the family moved from Atlanta to back the work. Matthew Vaughn cast her as Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass (2010) when she was thirteen, and the part set the pattern for the next few years: young, physical, at the edge of what the certificate allows. Martin Scorsese used her in Hugo (2011), Tim Burton in Dark Shadows (2012), and then Kick-Ass 2 and Carrie arrived in the same year. The larger studio films from that stretch, Carrie and If I Stay (2014) among them, met a mixed response. Around 2016 she stopped, for roughly two years, to think about what she was doing.
The films she came back with were smaller. The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018) is the one critics point to when arguing she can carry a drama without a weapon in her hand, and Greta (2019), opposite Isabelle Huppert, was her first adult lead. Since then there has been a series, The Peripheral (2022), the lead voice in Nimona (2023), and a return to the stage in Caroline (2025). We have not reviewed these and will not pretend to have weighed them. What the list does tell you is that she has kept choosing characters who are not there to be liked, and has steered away from the southern belle parts her accent might have brought her.
Her strength is physical. She trains for the fights, and it shows in how Mindy moves, but what we watch for is the moment after the fight, when the character has to be a person again and does not know how. The problem comes when a film wants only the first half of that. Cast her in something that needs the intensity and nothing else, and the awkwardness has nowhere to go; a good many of her early films needed exactly that. She has said she always tries to find something in her own life that connects her to the character. Give her a lunch table as well as a rooftop and you can see her looking for it.

Chloë Grace Moretz is an American actress. She began her career as a child with roles in the horror film The Amityville Horror (2005) and the series Desperate Housewives (2006–2007).
Her breakthrough came in 2010 as Mindy Macready / Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass. She reprised the role in Kick-Ass 2 (2013) and appeared in Hugo (2011), Dark Shadows (2012), Carrie (2013) and The Equalizer (2014). Moretz has also worked in voice roles, including in Bolt (2008), and on stage in off-Broadway productions.
