Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley make the selfish people in Absolutely Fabulous (1992) worth spending half an hour with. We laughed at the pair's behaviour because the performances let us enjoy their company without excusing it. Gernon's contribution came with three episodes of the fourth series in 2001, working with an established comic partnership. We rate her ability to handle an ensemble and keep the tone steady, without mistaking that for sole authorship of the comedy.
There is a useful warning in the same programme: celebrity appearances sometimes interrupt the better jokes. The regular cast is enough, and extra company does not necessarily improve an episode. Gernon works across studio sitcoms with live audiences and single-camera comedies on location, but her stated priority is making a programme believable and rooted in a particular place. That seems a sound starting point for a director whose job often includes helping other directors keep a series consistent.
The long association with Gavin & Stacey (2007–2024) puts that approach to sustained use. Working with writers and creators James Corden and Ruth Jones, she directed all 22 episodes as well as the specials, including the 2024 finale. That continuity matters in a comedy built around an ensemble: a change of director need not disturb the tone, but somebody has to take responsibility for it. Here, Gernon's responsibility extended across the run, rather than being confined to an occasional episode.
The move to American television in 2015 brought another extended responsibility with Speechless (2016–2019). She directed the pilot and many episodes, and served as lead director and executive producer for three seasons. These are different tasks: establishing how a programme works, then ensuring that it continues to work when other directors take over. Biography
Christine Gernon is a British television director and executive producer. Born in 1970 in Preston, Lancashire, she has directed numerous comedy series for British broadcasters.
Her credits include episodes of One Foot in the Grave, Absolutely Fabulous (Series 4), Gavin & Stacey and Bad Education. She has received BAFTA Television Award nominations for her work. In 2015 she began directing US series including New Girl, black-ish, Superstore, The Goldbergs, Speechless (as lead director and executive producer on the pilot and subsequent episodes) and Ghosts. She directed and executive produced the 2024 Gavin & Stacey finale. She is co-founder of Blue House Productions.
