Biography

Cloris Leachman was an American actress and comedian. She studied drama at Northwestern University and trained at the Actors Studio in New York.

Her breakthrough came as Phyllis Lindstrom in the CBS sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970–75); the spin-off series Phyllis (1975–77) followed. She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Last Picture Show (1971) and received eight Primetime Emmy Awards across her career, along with a Golden Globe Award and a Daytime Emmy Award.

Leachman voiced Mrs. Lynley Tensedge in the animated film The Iron Giant (1999) and appeared in numerous other films and television series, including Malcolm in the Middle (2000–06) as Ida Welker. She died in 2021.
