Colm Feore makes authority convincing through precise speech and physical control. We value his seriousness in unlikely material, but the Hollywood supporting parts give only a partial view of an actor whose Canadian work lets him lead.

In Face/Off (1997), Colm Feore plays Dr. Malcolm Walsh in a film built on an absurd identity swap. He is useful casting: precise speech and physical control can make authority convincing even when the premise is hard to swallow. John Woo's film depends chiefly on the pleasure John Travolta and Nicolas Cage take in playing each other. Feore's formal manner is well suited to supporting such extravagance. We recommend the film, though the gunfire goes on too long.
The fuller view begins with Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould (1993), the title role that established his screen reputation. Years of Shakespeare at Stratford help explain his comfort with heightened material, but Gould is a reminder that he was established as a lead before taking Hollywood supporting parts from 1997. Those parts should not become the only way of judging him.
Michael Mann's The Insider (1999) casts him as Richard Scruggs, again in support of a forceful central performance. We were moved by the whistleblower because Russell Crowe lets him be difficult as well as vulnerable. Feore's formality fits this serious company, although the film sometimes becomes excessively solemn. Its underwritten women are a further reservation, and neither fault stops us recommending it warmly.
The Canadian leads include Trudeau (2002) and Detective Martin Ward in Bon Cop, Bad Cop (2006), which puts his bilingual skill and comic timing to use. That is a useful corrective to the authority figures. As Sir Reginald Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy (2019–2024), he applies his classical technique to genre television, while continuing his work at Stratford. Biography
Colm Feore is a Canadian actor. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on 22 August 1958, he trained at the National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal after attending Ridley College in Ontario. He spent many seasons as a classical actor with the Stratford Festival, appearing in leading roles in numerous Shakespeare productions and other works.
Feore is known for his performances as Glenn Gould in Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould (1993), Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in the CBC miniseries Trudeau (2002), for which he won a Gemini Award, and Detective Martin Ward in Bon Cop, Bad Cop (2006) and its 2017 sequel. His film credits include Dr. Malcolm Walsh in Face/Off (1997), Lord Marshal in The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and roles in Thor (2011) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). On television he has played Sir Reginald Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy and General Ted Brockhart in House of Cards. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada.
