Diego Luna is most persuasive when he does not hurry to make his characters likeable. We rate the guarded uncertainty he brings to Andor highly; some of his smaller Hollywood roles have given that restraint too little to do.

In Andor (2022), Diego Luna leaves Cassian Andor difficult to read. His guarded performance does not ask us to approve of the man before we have had a chance to consider him. We find him a persuasive centre for the series because the uncertainty is allowed to matter. He can hold our attention without reassuring us that our trust will be rewarded.
His international breakthrough was as Tenoch Iturbide in Y Tu Mamá También (2001), working with director Alfonso Cuarón and actor Gael García Bernal. The Hollywood supporting parts that followed did not always make equally useful demands: playing the sensitive man could become a narrow assignment. The Terminal (2004) belongs to that less satisfying stretch. A small part can suit a restrained actor, but it still needs something for him to hold back.
Playing Cassian in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) gave his quiet intensity a useful place in an ensemble. The link with Y Tu Mamá También is the naturalism: he makes sense in a large production without having to act larger. Narcos: Mexico (2018), in which he played Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, offered another lead who was not easily made agreeable. Then Andor gave Cassian a longer story.
With Tony Gilroy as writer and showrunner, Andor gives Luna time to let the character develop. The attention paid to ordinary lives means that his doubts have something concrete behind them. We were moved by the economic desperation around Cassian, because getting through an ordinary day already looks hard enough without being asked for more. Luna keeps those demands human, making us consider what they would cost this particular man.
The patience is also a weakness: the opening takes too long to find its shape. Luna's restraint cannot make that delay disappear, and we would not sell the series as a brisk introduction to his work. Start with Andor, if the evening allows a drama that needs time to get going.
Biography
Diego Luna is a Mexican actor, director and producer. Born in Toluca, State of Mexico, he is the son of set designer Alejandro Luna and costume designer Fiona Alexander. He began acting as a child in Mexican telenovelas and theatre before his breakthrough in the 2001 film Y tu mamá también.
Luna is best known for portraying Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) and the Disney+ series Andor (2022–2025). His other credits include Frida (2002), The Terminal (2004), Milk (2008), Elysium (2013), The Book of Life (2014) and Narcos: Mexico (2018–2020). He has directed the features Abel (2010), Cesar Chavez (2014) and Mr. Pig (2016), and has produced projects with frequent collaborator Gael García Bernal. In 2025, Time magazine named him one of the world's 100 most influential people.
