Biography
Erskine Sanford (19 November 1885 – 7 July 1969) was an American actor on the stage, in radio and motion pictures. Born in Trinidad, Colorado, he was educated at the Horace Mann School in New York City and began his professional career with Minnie Maddern Fiske's company, making his debut in Leah Kleschna.
Long associated with the Theatre Guild, he later joined Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre company. He appeared in several of Welles's films, including Citizen Kane (1941) as the newspaper editor Herbert Carter, The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) as Roger Bronson, The Stranger (1946), The Lady from Shanghai (1947) and Macbeth (1948). Other credits include Spellbound (1945), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) and Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948).
