Biography
Francis Ford was an American actor, film director and writer. He was the elder brother and early mentor of director John Ford, and appeared in many of his brother's films as a character actor, often in uncredited or supporting roles.
Born Francis Feeney in Portland, Maine, he began working in films around 1909. He directed and starred in numerous silent westerns and serials in the 1910s and 1920s before focusing primarily on acting from the late 1920s. His credits include uncredited appearances in Frankenstein (1931), Stagecoach (1939), The Grapes of Wrath (1940) and The Ox-Bow Incident (1943). He played Dan Tobin in The Quiet Man (1952). His son Philip Ford also worked in film.
