Fi1m perspective

Franka Potente can make a frantic thriller feel as though a real person is caught inside it. Her strength is physical conviction, and Run Lola Run gives that conviction a clear purpose and someone worth caring about.

Franka Potente is running, and the effort matters. In Run Lola Run (1998), Lola needs to reach Manni, played by Moritz Bleibtreu, while Tom Tykwer finds ever more conspicuous ways to keep the thriller moving. Potente makes that need clear without asking for much time to explain herself. We were anxious for her because the determination in her running made reaching him feel urgent. She gives us someone to care about even when the film seems most pleased with its tricks.

Potente keeps us interested in a person while everything around her draws attention to the filmmaking. Lola’s relationship with Manni is sketched quickly, but she gives it enough feeling to carry the chase. The cutting and techno score are enjoyable; the thoughts about chance are thin. Tykwer deserves credit for leaving space for his lead amid all that activity. Potente’s conviction is a large part of why we recommend the film, despite the ideas it cannot make much of.

Her work with Tykwer continued in The Princess and the Warrior (2000), a more intimate drama about fate and connection. She moved into Hollywood with The Bourne Identity (2002), playing Marie Helena Kreutz alongside Matt Damon, and returned for The Bourne Supremacy (2004). The subsequent career has moved between international films and television, including American Horror Story and Taboo, rather than supplying a succession of starring vehicles. She also wrote Home (2020), her feature directorial debut.

The shift towards supporting parts and television should not, by itself, count as an artistic decline. An actor who can make a relationship convincing with so little explanation has something useful to bring to a smaller part. We would welcome another substantial lead with a task as clear as Lola’s, and a script less pleased with its own cleverness. For a first encounter, choose Run Lola Run for Potente rather than its lessons about chance.
