Biography

Gabriel Yared (born 7 October 1949) is a Lebanese-French composer of film scores. Born in Beirut, he moved to France in the late 1960s after studying law. He attended the École Normale de Musique de Paris, studying composition with Henri Dutilleux.

Yared began scoring films in the early 1980s, including work for Jean-Luc Godard. He achieved international recognition with scores for French films such as Betty Blue (1986) and Camille Claudel (1988). His English-language work includes long collaborations with director Anthony Minghella on The English Patient (1996), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) and Cold Mountain (2003). He won the Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globe for Best Original Score for The English Patient, and received Oscar nominations for the other two Minghella films. Other notable scores include those for The Lives of Others (2006), City of Angels (1998) and Judy (2019).
