Biography

Howard E. Smith is an American film editor. He grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and studied at Northwestern University in the late 1960s, where he wrote, directed, shot and edited over fifty short films. He received one of the first AFI grants to independent filmmakers and later attended the AFI Center for Advanced Film Studies in Los Angeles in 1970 as a Directing and Cinematography Fellow.

Smith's feature editing credits include Near Dark (1987), The Abyss (1989), Point Break (1991), Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), Strange Days (1995), Dante's Peak (1997), Blade: Trinity (2004) and Snakes on a Plane (2006). He has worked repeatedly with directors including Kathryn Bigelow and James Foley.
