Biography
H. O. Schulze, also credited as Hugo O. Schulze or Hugo Otto Schulze, was a German cinematographer and documentary film director. Born on 14 August 1905 in Kalkberge (Rüdersdorf bei Berlin), he trained in photochemistry at the Technical University of Berlin and worked at UFA.
In 1936 he was one of around four dozen cameramen on Leni Riefenstahl’s Olympia (1938), the two-part documentary of the Berlin Olympics. He also photographed Der Tiger von Eschnapur (1938) and Das indische Grabmal (1938), as well as earlier documentaries such as Jugend der Welt (1936).
After the war he continued as a cinematographer on features and directed numerous short documentaries, some of which screened at Cannes and Venice.
